The incidence of CAD in young Indians is between 12% and 16%, compared to 5% among their Western counterparts

According to recent statistics, the incidence of coronary artery disease (CHD) has increased in young Indians. Over 50% of the mortality from cardiovascular disease occurs in persons under the age of 50 years. Thanks to a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy habits, heart disease has affected young Indians 10 years earlier than their Western counterparts. About 7% of patients between the ages of 25 and 40 have CAD.

CAD is a disease that affects blood flow to the heart. If the heart is not adequately supplied with oxygen-rich blood, its condition worsens and there is an increased risk of heart attack. Heart disease significantly affects quality of life, especially in individuals predisposed to the condition. In addition to timely diagnosis and treatment, precautions and lifestyle changes at an early age can help save lives.

Dr. Ashwani Mehta, chief cardiologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, said: "By choosing lifestyle, adolescents are becoming increasingly vulnerable to diseases such as Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Some of these are overweight, poor diet, physical inactivity, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. An unhealthy lifestyle can cause plaque to accumulate in the arteries, supplying blood to the heart and causing hardening and narrowing of the arteries. This condition is called atherosclerosis. Over time, the heart muscle may become unable to get the blood or oxygen, resulting in chest pain (angina pectoris) or heart attack. The fact that heart disease may not have obvious symptoms can lead to difficulties in timely diagnosis and treatment. "

Cholesterol levels of 240 mg / dL (6.21 mmol / L) or more are referred to as hyperlipidemia.

Dr. Mehta added, "While treatment and surgery are the last resort for people diagnosed with CAD, it is imperative to change their lifestyle early to prevent the onset of these problems. Such changes include a "healthy" diet, regular exercise, avoiding or giving up smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight. People with a family history of heart disease should be more careful.

Treatment

Patients with atherosclerosis may require treatment called angioplasty. In this procedure, a catheter is used to clear the clogged artery. This is done using the balloon tip of the catheter. Another option is bypass transplantation of the coronary arteries (CABG). A process in which a healthy artery of the body is linked to the blocked one. The transplanted artery or vein bypasses the blocked part of the coronary artery. Drug-releasing coronary stents are used after balloon angioplasty in coronary arteries. In the long term these stents contribute to the maintenance of the patency of the coronary arteries.

Some Healthy Heart Tips

  • Take a low-sodium diet with no more than 6 g sodium chloride per day.
  • Minimize the consumption of trans fat in hardened oils or vanaspati ghee. They lower the good HDL cholesterol and increase the bad LDL cholesterol. Avoid eating something to limit the intake of trans fats in excess.
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta or even white sugar. Replace them with options such as wholemeal flour, healthy green cereals and oatmeal.
  • Exercise regularly – at least 30 minutes a day – as this has many benefits for the heart.
  • Quit smoking and consume alcohol in moderation.
  • All individuals should undergo a basic lipid profile to determine their lipid levels and plan treatment with lipid-lowering drugs if needed as early as possible.
