World’s Strongest Man Martins Licis shares eccentric deadlifts



Strong man Martins Licis is still on his way to recovering from a summer car accident. While skipping this year’s “Strongest Man in the World” competition, he trains and heals his body before his next goal and wins the Arnold Strongman Classic in March 2021. He’s working on his eccentric deadlift.

“It’s been a long time. I think over a year,” says Licis. “Last year I was in repair mode and it actually led to the strongest man in the world. My right hip hurt so much that I couldn’t do a crazy deadlift.”

He tries to try these eccentric movements to “maintain his strength without damaging my hips too much”

Before he gets to the deadlift, he does a few pull-ups to “activate the lats and get the grip strong”.

After his set of 10, he hops on a scale to quickly check his weight.

“Ooo, a little heavy … 338 pounds,” says Licis.

He does two more pull-ups and then comes on to his deadlift. He uses a metronome to make sure he keeps a steady rhythm for the eccentric or descending part of the movement. After warming up with a few reps, he charges the bar to 517 pounds.

After one rep, he loses some weight to “contrast that with some speed work.” The bar is at 385 pounds and he pulls through three repetitions. He then reloads the bar to 517 pounds for four more sets. For the eccentric part of the movements, he slowly lowers the bar for 15 seconds.

He keeps spinning between lighter, faster reps and heavier, slower reps. He then announced that his training last Sunday was ruined.

“I lost all motivation because too many people were talking in the gym. Usually nothing prevents me from getting a good workout, but I’ve used bullshit excuses not to lift as hard as possible,” says Licis.

He says his training partner Romark sent him a text saying, “If you want to fuck it, do it all the way,” and he got his training motivation back while preparing for the Arnold competition .

Another problem is a tear in his hip that he has dealt with “for two years.”

“It got worse and worse. The whole time I thought it was my Achilles tendon, it turned out to be a small tear in the back of my labral. It took me the last half year to find out what it helps Squat University’s Dr. Aaron Horschig has done a tremendous amount of time building strength and stability in my hip, “says Licis. “Basically, I’ve stopped making movements that make me feel this pain. And I’ve been trying to figure out a way to deadlift. So I’m very happy with how those deadlifts felt today.”

Next, he moves on to one-armed slopes to develop his core and grip strength. He holds everyone for 10 seconds. Once he’s done a few sets on each arm, he moves on to one-armed rows of dumbbells, followed by bent rows of 75-pound dumbbells.
