Will Tennyson ate and trained like a Formula 1 driver for a day

Fitness YouTuber Will Tennyson ponders what it really takes to be a top Formula 1 driver. He plans to follow the training and diet plan that the McLaren racing team normally uses. It includes two intense workouts and a comprehensive healthy eating program.

“A lot of people seem to believe that drivers don’t have to be in good shape because they are strapped into a car and have very little exercise. To be at the forefront of the sport, you have to be in top physical condition,” says Tennyson.

He starts his day at 7 a.m. with a healthy breakfast consisting of oatmeal with blueberries, sunflower seeds, and honey, plus a slice of toast with almond butter and green tea for a total of 550 calories. He also drinks 400 ml of mineral water with lemon.

Next, he goes to the gym for his first workout of the day: a cardio-intensive HIIT workout.

“A typical racing driver̵

7;s heart rate is between 140 and 170 beats per minute and can even be between 190 and 205 beats per minute,” says Tennyson. “So there aren’t really many sports activities other than long-distance marathons that keep your body temperature and heart rate as high as in Formula 1 for as long.”

He also notes that a driver can lose between 4 and 11 pounds of body fluid during a race.

For training, he does 10 30-second sprint laps on a treadmill, followed by 90 seconds of jogging for recovery.

Five laps later, he explains that the drivers (like their cars) are also expected to be as light as possible and that a racer’s reported average body fat is between 4 and 10 percent.

“That was brutal,” he says when he’s finished. He had an average heart rate of 148 beats per minute for the 20-minute workout. “I have no idea how to keep that heart rate going for 90 minutes,” he says.

For his post-workout snack, he has a peanut butter granola bar, coconut water, and a grapefruit.

After showering, he prepares lunch, which is a tofu pan with garlic and vegetables, 3 squares of dark chocolate, and a cup of coffee, for a total of 775 calories. Tennyson noted that the food options are high in antioxidants.

Once lunch is ready, he goes to a McLaren dealer and takes a McLaren 720S for a spin – while in full racing gear.

Then it’s time for another snack with banana and apple juice before the second workout, which was created by strength and conditioning trainer Alex Stott.

He follows it with some pre-qualification movements and stretches.

Tennyson then heads home to prepare a dinner of salmon, sweet potatoes, cucumber, tomato and avocado salad with spinach and arugula, and yogurt and berries with a total of 750 calories.

At around 9:30 p.m. he ends his day with a last snack of herbal tea, four crackers with parmesan and nutritional yeast with fruits. His total calories for the day were 2,800.

“Great food, great workouts and lots of fun with the car,” says Tennyson.
