One of the best ways to do this is to integrate your zip code into the National Cycle Network website and explore some of its traffic-free routes, tours, and quiet hiking trails. It will certainly beat overcrowded sidewalks or the same racetrack in the same park.

Save this challenging stretch along the traffic-free Brampton Valley Way near Northampton for later training plans. It follows one of the longest dismantled railroads in the country from Kingsthorpe to Market Harborough and leads through the tranquil countryside, the pretty Chapel Brampton and, if you feel energetic, on to Brixworth Country Park (pictured). Here you can walk on a traffic-free path around the lake at Pitsford Water, nestled in the rolling rural Northamptonshire.

Wells And Holkham Circuit

Distance 10 miles (16 km) Tour Terrain Mixture of private roads and public roads and paths

This route starts in the charming fishing port of Wells-next-the -Sea and runs through the Holkham National Nature Reserve before returning to the starting point. Leaving Beach Road will quickly take you to Norfolk Coast Path, where you can enjoy beautiful views of Holkham Bay, one of the country's most unspoilt and beautiful sandy beaches.

Swansea Bike Path

Distance 6 miles (10K) Terrain Traffic-free paved path

After the sweeping Swansea Bay, this route offers a fantastic view of the eastern end the Gower Peninsula. Starting at Swansea Marina, the trail follows the route of a former railroad along the coast to the Victorian coastal town of Mumbles.
