If you've ever bought a diet plan that helps you lose inches, you'll probably come across the Paleo diet and the Whole30 diet. At first glance, there does not seem to be much that distinguishes the Paleo Diet from the Whole30 Diet . Both are very popular and both are low in carbohydrates, high in protein and free from processed foods.
However, there are some important differences between diets. We have asked several nutrition experts to bring us closer.
What is the Paleo diet?
The Paleo diet is also commonly referred to as "The Caveman Diet". Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the diet allows for all the foods that your Paleolithic ancestors ate 1
The idea is that cavemen did not have heart disease, obesity or diabetes. Why should not we eat like that? Not included? Well, everything with modern processing methods. That means no frozen pizzas, fried chicken or filled salad dressings. Not surprisingly, refined vegetable oils and salt from dairy products are no-no-numbers.
What is surprising, however, is that foods such as cereals, legumes and potatoes are not permitted for the Paleo-eater.
What Is The Whole30 Diet?
Like the Paleo diet, the Whole30 diet is high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and does not allow processed foods. Unlike Paleo, Whole30 lasts only 30 days. According to founder Melissa Hartwig, Whole30 is an elimination diet that helps identify food sensitivities. "It's a self-experiment, according to which there is a whole outlined plan to translate what has been learned into a sustainable lifestyle," she explained before to Men's Health.
Who needs an excretion diet? Well, they can be helpful to people who are disturbed by digestive problems or rashes . By taking certain foods out of your diet for a period of time and then slowly reintroducing them, you can get a better sense of what foods are causing you problems.
That means you probably work better with a doctor if you're really worried that a food is causing gastrointestinal problems, said Alyssa Ardolino, a registered nutritionist with the International Food Information Council, previously  Men's Health.
Which diet is more restrictive?
The Paleo Diet: It is child's play that our caveman ancestors did not have a large variety of food at that time. As such, you are only allowed grass-fed meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, eggs, nuts and seeds, and some oils (olives, walnuts, flaxseeds, macadamias, avocados, coconuts).
This means things like grains, legumes, refined sugars, dairy products, refined vegetable oils, processed foods and even salt are banned. However, you are rarely allowed to eat three non-Paleo meals a week. Theoretically, you should be able to occasionally consume beer or a slice of pizza, right?
The Whole30 Diet: Similar to Paleo, Whole30 prohibits dairy, cereals, legumes, processed foods, and refines vegetable oils. Also on the list of banned Whole30 foods is everything that includes sugar (sorry, no maple syrup, honey or stevia), alcohol (even when cooking), soy (tofu, soy sauce, tempeh, miso, edamame), MSG or sulfites as well all baked goods from "approved" Whole30 ingredients. The idea is to get rid of all foods that can cause GI problems, skin problems, fatigue and cravings. Essentially, you give your body the chance to heal and reset.
Which foods are left over? Meat, vegetables, fruits, eggs and natural fat sources like olive oil and nuts. If you are not sure whether a food is safe or not, you may view the list of approved and prohibited foods on the Whole30 website.
There are no cheating meals or compromises with the Whole30 diet. If you do, you must follow it up to the letter – for the entire 30 days.
The winner: Paleo. While both diets are fairly restrictive, Rachele Pojednic is a lecturer in nutrition science at Simmons University and a former research associate at the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine at Harvard Medical School, heavily used on love language Whole30 ( phrases such as "Do not even think about the possibility of" slipping "and" That's not difficult "), and believes that the diet can promote an unhealthy eating relationship." Which diet will make it easier to keep?
The Paleo Diet: Although both diets limit similar foods, Paleo is a bit more relaxed than Whole30. "As Pojednic notes, Paleo is supposed to be a lifestyle have it out anyway – and that's fine.
The Whole30 Diet: Once you get on the diet of Whole30, you've started a day from the beginning. That's right, just a tablespoon of ice cream or a sip of beer and it goes back to the starting line.
The winner: Paleo. The fact that Paleo offers more flexibility makes it easier to follow. Knowing that you only have to follow Whole30 for a month may make it easier for some people to stick to it for the duration.
Which diet is better for weight loss?
The Paleo Diet: Any weight loss you have on Paleo (or Whole30, for that matter) is likely to come from which limits the amount of calories as from an overview in Current Gastroenterology Reports . As Pojednic notes, the magic of losing weight in Paleo is not the elimination of certain food groups (such as grains), but a healthier diet. Just be warned that over-use of paleo-friendly foods such as meat, nuts and seeds can lead to weight gain.
The Whole30 diet: Similar to Paleo, your weight loss at Whole30 will probably be thanks to the fact that you will consume fewer total calories, says Pojednic.
The winner: Whole30. "Whole30 is likely to deliver better results just because it's so restrictive and for a period of time," says Liz Weinandy RD, MPH, a registered nutritionist at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center.
However, she and Pojednic warn that your weight loss at Whole30 is likely to be short-lived: "My guess would be that people do really well on Whole30 in the first 30 days, and things will start on the 31st away from the rails, "says Pojednic. Paleo may work better for long-term weight loss, as this is more of a cultural shift than a 30-day correction.
The result: The Paleo diet is the better diet.
Weinandy and Pojednic agree that Paleo has a small advantage over Whole30.
"I would give Paleo a little more thumb just because I do not like this attitude [of Whole30]," says Weinandy. She points to the harsh love language of Whole30, which Pojednic had previously pointed out. "I never like to see that language." What she and Pojednic like about dieting is that they encourage both to focus on eating whole foods.
However, the fact that both Paleo and Whole30 ban dairy products, grains and legumes means that you may need calcium and vitamin D if you choose one of the two diet plans. You should also top up fruits and vegetables to make sure you get fiber. "The true backbone of the Paleo Diet are fruits and vegetables that are superimposed with different types of protein, so if you're committed to the intent of this diet, you should be great," says Pojednic.
Think twice before trying a diet. Whichever diet you choose, make sure it stimulates whole foods – without fear of others.
