After a long wait (more than three years), Apple has finally released a follow-up to the time-honored, ultra-compact iPad mini 4. The all-new, lesser-priced iPad mini has retained the iconic design and industry-leading craftsmanship of its predecessor. What the newcomer brings, however, is highly updated hardware, supported by Apple's new A1
I spent the last few days testing the new Apple iPad mini. My conclusion: It is the best compact disk that can buy money – with an insurmountable margin.
If you're looking for an ultra-portable and future-proof tablet at this point, you'll need the latest iPad mini at the top of your shopping list.
And here are all the reasons why:
It is the most powerful tablet in its class
The new iPad mini is overwhelmingly more powerful than its competitors of comparable size. In comparison to its predecessor generation, it has three times more computing power and nine times more graphics power.
This is because the new iPad mini contains the Apple's own A12 Bionic chip with a built-in Neural Engine. The component of the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR is already up to date and offers cross-industry processing and graphics performance.
During my tests, every task I did on the iPad mini was done instantly, from the simple opening of apps to the seamless switching between a wide variety of open apps, regardless of the occasion.
As with the latest iPhones, the Neural Engine of the A12 Bionic Chips plays a crucial role in their impressive performance. However, it guarantees that the tablet always works perfectly.
It has a fantastic retina display
The screen of the new iPad mini is by far the best in its class. In my tests, I've found that it's amazingly sharp and vibrant – and even legible outdoors. The angles are also great if you want to share content with someone sitting next to you.
The retina display of the new iPad mini is the same size and resolution as the outgoing model, but is brighter and shows a wider range of colors. The LCD display features Apple's award-winning True Tone technology, which seamlessly adjusts white balance to light conditions.
Apple Pencil Compatible
The new iPad Mini is the first compact slate to be compatible with Apple Pencil. The pen is the most accurate accessory of its kind and gives users of the iPad mini a completely new range of functions and possible interactions with the tablet.
Support for Apple Pencil is native to iOS, so you can do loads with the accessory as soon as you turn on the tablet. This includes, among other things, the editing, commenting and signing of documents and photos.
Best of all, the App Store is full of great apps that take full advantage of Apple Pencil. They range from great note-taking options to feature-rich creativity apps that will appeal to even the most demanding of professionals.
Apple iOS offers the best selection of tablet-friendly apps and games.
With Apple iOS and the App Store, the iPad Mini has the best selection of tablet-friendly apps and games. There are countless great titles to choose from! These include superb augmented reality titles, powerful apps for productivity, creativity and education, as well as blockbuster gaming titles such as Fortnite .
AR apps are optimized with Neural Engine thanks to the new A12 Bionic chip. We like HomeCourt, the basketball training app, and the Home Depot app is getting better. And we use the Moleskin app (Actions and Notes), which works seamlessly with Apple Pencil to forever end paper notes and increase our productivity 10x.
Every app and game I tested on the iPad mini went great. Overall, the large amount of content optimized for the iPad should be enough to convince you to choose the iPad. Competitors running on other mobile platforms, such as Android, have desperately fallen behind in this journey.
According to Apple, the new iPad mini can deliver up to 10 hours of screen time. I found this assertion when testing the tablet accurate and quite impressive for such a light and thin product.
The unit's built-in stereo speakers are solid for their form factor, though not quite as impressive as the more expensive iPad Pro. I wish they were flanking the Retina display in landscape orientation instead of sitting under the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
Prices for the updated iPad mini start at a reasonable price of $ 399 for a model with 64GB of built-in memory. I strongly recommend spending $ 150 on a 256GB version instead. If you have four times more memory, this is worth the extra cost. The option for a mobile network connection costs an additional $ 130, as usual.
You can purchase an iPad mini in silver, gold or space gray.
Like all things Apple, the new iPad mini has a great ecosystem of original accessories and third-party accessories to help you build. Get the most out of tablet productivity and entertainment.
