If a television series had pointed out a year ago that the SARS virus was introduced to China by a villainous American scientist – and that covert biological wars were raging between the superpowers – we might all have dismissed it as good fictional fun. Amazon Utopia, based on the British Channel 4 series of the same name, turns epidemiological conspiracy theory into an 8-episode binge. And while it may not do anything to lessen the actual conspiracies between China and America, the series also reveals the dangers when vaccines are used on a large scale (although this is also a little conspiratorial). In summary: Utopia will feel strangely foresighted and may become an object of conspiratorial obsession itself. Just what the internet needs.
In reality, Utopia has been in production for several years. HBO originally planned to direct the series with David Fincher (Fincher and Utopia The writer Gillian Flynn had previously worked together Ex girlfriend, the Oscar nominated adaptation of Flynn̵
The result: the same weird bloody tariff that has become a trend in streaming lately –Hunter, The young, Umbrella Academy– Colorful R-rated customizations where teams of people do terrible things to supposedly terrible people.
If this is your jam, then Utopia is probably your show. But will all twists and turns and conspiracies continue?
Will there be a season 2 of? Utopia?
While Amazon has not yet officially confirmed the second season of UtopiaThere is a strong precedent. The Channel 4 series (written by Dennis Kelly, whose latest show The third day is currently airing on HBO), on which the American series is based, ran over two seasons and 12 episodes. While they cover similar areas, the Americans are Utopia differs from the original, which means that the series is not tied to rigid source material. (However, this can also throw a number off the rails.)

In an interview with World screenSeries writer Gillian Flynn replied if she would portray Season 2.
“Absolutely. We’re already in gear. It seems strange since I feel like I just signed out a few weeks ago. Is it time to get back in gear?” Utopia World? I never left! I’ve been with it for six and a half years! “
That Flynn has “signed out” for a second season seems like a good sign. It seems that Amazon is a game to move the series forward.
What is season 2 about?
Season 1 was written and filmed prior to the pandemic, making all conspiracy and vaccine motives unintended. Season 2, written and filmed after COVID-19, is unlikely to ignore the events of the past few months. A show on virology after 2020 is sure to be shaped by the fears, mistakes and outcomes of this international reaction.
Let’s just hope it’s not too on the nose. Season 1, blind to the future, still feels too close to home.
