How do you appropriately celebrate May 4th, Star Wars as a quasi-holiday? You could of course put on a Darth Vader mask to do your shopping, but for people who take the day seriously, the stake has been increased thanks to the Hacksmith Industries crew who just launched their latest creation: a lightsaber in Kylo Ren style that glows red at 3000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Star Wars fans probably already know Hacksmith – they are the people who built a protosaber and a metal cutting lightsaber . As the new video shows, the project builds on their previous experiences, including the type of high-stakes mistakes that a fire truck brought to their laboratories. They have spent more than a year building their new lightsaber and are finally ready to show it to the world.
Replicating Kylo Ren's deadly weapon meant nailing down a few important details. First, they had to add two more blades to the previous tungsten-based lightsaber to give it cross protection. This required some 3D printed custom parts as well as ensuring that all electrical components fit in the handle.
Second, as any fan can tell you, Kylo Ren constructed his blade from a cracked Kyber crystal which gave it a crackling, unstable appearance. You might think this is easy to do if you bind some chemicals used in fireworks and street torches to the lightsaber ̵
