There are many cardio options to improve your heart health

February is the American Hearth Month, which provides a great opportunity to work on cardiovascular health. Heart disease is No. 1 cause of death in the United States, but risks can be limited. An active lifestyle is an effective way of improving heart health.

It's easy to create a heart healthy workout program. Find an activity from this list that you like and strengthen your heart.

Running

It does not matter if you prefer trails, a treadmill, or a walkway. Running can prevent high blood pressure, keeps the arteries free of plaque and reduces the risk of coronary heart disease.

Invest in a good pair of running shoes and aim for something between jogging and a light sprint. If you are more motivated by goals, you should choose a running track of 5 km or 10 km to train for a few months. Keep up a brisk pace as you swim your rounds to burn calories and boost your heart. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that makes it ideal for older athletes, or people with joint pain or other joint problems.

Cycling

Another gentle but effective cardiovascular exercise. If you are about to start an exercise routine, try the casual indoor recumbent bike. Or communicate with nature when driving outdoors. If you want to increase the intensity, challenge yourself in a group with a bicycle.

Go

Do not underestimate. The Mayo Clinic offers numerous benefits of a daily, brisk walk. These include maintaining a healthy weight, preventing heart disease and diabetes, improving balance and even improving mood. When you go uphill, the intensity increases a lot more and is even better for your heart.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

It's not always easy to find the time to do a week long workout. HIIT provides an effective training option that does not take much time. Instead of running 20 minutes on the treadmill, try walking for 20 to 30 seconds near your maximum speed and then slowing down for a minute or two to a slow pace. Repeat the procedure for about 20 minutes to perform an effective fat burning workout.
