The strongest man in the world Martins Licis trains NFL star Vernon Davis



Reigning Strongest Man in the World Martins Licis recently announced that he will not compete in this year’s World’s Strongest Man contest due to injuries sustained after being hit by a car earlier this year. But that doesn’t mean he’ll stop training.

He recently met up with ex-NFL star Vernon Davis (who also just announced he’ll be playing in the new season of Dance with the stars) for a session focusing on legs and presses.

Davis talked about the teams he had previously played for during his career (the San Francisco 49ers, the Denver Broncos, and the Washington Football Team). He said his favorite team was the Washington Football Team.

“I grew up a lifelong Washington fan and it was really amazing to go home and play in front of family and friends. I wouldn̵

7;t trade it for anything,” said Davis.

The guys then do their workout for the day and start doing zombie squats. Davis was trying the move for the first time, so Licis offered some instructions. Licis advised Davis to spread his knees and crouch with his feet out, pausing at the end of each rep.

“I’ve seen some great guys, but he’s one of a kind,” said Davis of Licis’ mobility. “He can really move. I like the way he bends. It’s pretty amazing to see that.”

They continued to add weight to the zombie squat, rising to 200 pounds. Davis loved the challenge.

“It feels good on the back, it’s crazy,” said Davis. “Why didn’t I do that ?! As long as I was playing, I never did zombie squats.”

They kept talking while they exercised, and Davis shared a story about the worst injury he has ever had. Given his livelihood as an NFL star, it was pretty tame.

“The worst injury I ever had was a strained MCL during my early years in the NFL. But no surgery,” said Davis.

Next, the guys move to shoulder presses.

“For me, my shoulder is still recovering from the car accident. So don’t expect anything impressive. I’ll do my best,” Licis said.

Davis shared that his bench press was a maximum of 435 pounds, while his maximum number of reps for 225 pounds, which is a standard basic test for NFL prospects, is 33 reps.

“Better than ever,” said Licis.

Davis also disclosed that his 40-yard hitting time was 4.36 seconds – which is a ridiculously quick time for his size and position.

Of course, Licis’s warm-up before going to the shoulder press consisted of lifting Davis overhead for a squat. (Davis said he weighed 240 pounds so that wasn’t a small elevator.)

After doing a few shoulder presses, they switched to the bench press, which Licis says is his weak point. To warm up, Licis and Davis started with single-armed boards. Davis grabbed a couple of dumbbells and used an incline bench before breaking it off for the day.

“He’s got to dance after that, so let’s keep it short and sweet,” Licis quipped.
