Since the news of his tragic death on Monday at the age of 52, tributes have been paid for the 90-year-old teenage heartthrob and the Riverdale star, Luke Perry. As Dave Holmes of Esquire writes about Perry's portrayal of Dylan McKay on 90210 "he bailed out a brutal bad boy with a good heart."
It is this description of Perry as a benevolent soul who has pervaded every memory out there. And late Monday Colin Hanks brought an incredible story to Instagram that perfectly illustrates the type of Perry. As Hanks wrote:
I only met him once, but the story is too good not to tell the sad events of today. My wife and I are on a plane back from Mexico. A few rows in front of us, these two brothers, little children, beat each other out. Your poor parents can not stop crying, screaming and screaming. If you are a parent, you understand. Sometimes you can not do anything. It was almost two hours like that. Then about 10 minutes before landing it gets really bad. Out of nowhere comes a man from the first class. Hat, beard, sunglasses, blowing a balloon in the air. He binds it and gives it away, as if he would stretch out a sword to a king. Kneeling, head down, arms up. Children calm down in milliseconds. Plane almost applauded. 15 minutes longer and the WWIII would probably have started, but we landed before that could happen.
We get off the plane and wait in inches. Look at the guy and I tell my wife "Holy shit, I think the balloon man / hero is Luke Perry." As luck would have it, we'll stand side by side Out of the blue, turn to me and say a few friendly words about Fargo that somehow blew me away, and I begin to sing his praises about how long I've admired him, and also about the movement with the balloon. "That's a pro movement! You can not teach that! He tells me he always flies with a couple of balloons to give screaming kids, so I do not know if that's true, but I have no reason to believe it was not Guy like a true gentleman, soon too damned, and I'm damned if I'm not traveling with spare balloons
It's a beautiful little moment and a path we should all aspire to remember.
