You end a meal, and suddenly your stomach turns into knots, you feel a burning sensation in your throat and the rumble in Your throat The bowel sends you straight to the bathroom, which may be an indication that you are allergic to anything you have just eaten, but more likely, you are just intolerant.
A recent study in JAMA found that while one in five adults think they are suffering from a food allergy, in fact only one in ten. Most people probably only have food intolerance, say the authors of the study.
"It's awesome. People usually confuse an allergy with intolerance," says Danielle Capalino, RD, a New York-based nutritionist specializing in food intolerance, and author of the recently released [1
Sometimes it's deliberate – in a restaurant it can be easier to explain that you have an allergy and this formulation increases the likelihood that you will take your restrictions seriously, explains Capalino. (This is how you should deal with your food allergies on social occasions.) However, many people may innocently refer to the negative effects of "food not approved with their system" as an allergy even if it does not meet the technical criteria.
A true food allergy causes an immune system reaction, but intolerance does not. "Food allergy and intolerance can have many of the same symptoms, one reason for intolerance is that the body does not have the enzymes to build up this food, as in lactose, which causes digestive symptoms such as flatulence, flatulence, diarrhea," says Capalino. "However, if you're allergic to dairy, you will not be lacking the enzyme, instead your body will actually develop an immune response that can also cause gastrointestinal symptoms, but can also cause a rash, respiratory problems, or serious illness.", Anaphylaxis. The main difference between food allergy and intolerance
Food allergies can be life-threatening, while food intolerances do not. That's why it's important to correctly diagnose your food issues and not just dismiss it as intolerance. (Speaking of: Is it possible to get food intolerance?)
On the other hand, making an erroneous claim that you have an allergy makes it risky for people who actually do : restaurant and say that you are against Wheat are allergic and need special gluten-free pasta, but then try the flour-filled chocolate cake for dessert. The server sees this and does not take allergies seriously over time. "Interestingly, the same study JAMA found that nearly half of the affected adults had at least one of their food allergies after puberty – like this is it possible to suddenly be allergic to a food that you have eaten hundreds of times? (Why? The science is not quite sure yet.)
How to know if you have a food allergy
Most experienced reactions Tenderness, vomiting, respiratory problems, or anaphylaxis, says Capalino, are true that intolerances can also cause GI disease, but if it's an allergy, it can be very fast and can cause skin manifestations (such as a rash) it will become fast and furious, she adds.
The most common food allergens are fish, peanuts, shellfish, Tree nuts, soy, cow milk, eggs and wheat – which can be confusing, as these last four are often also intolerance offenders, says Capalino. And if your suspect is not one of those eight, there is also a strange phenomenon, the oral allergy syndrome, where you are allergic to pollen but react to food with the same enzyme as apples, peaches, parsley or carrots (read more) in the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.)
However, if you think you have an allergy but have never been tested, Capalino recommends attending an allergist. He or she can confirm that it is your body, that your body tells you to get rid of the insulting food in order to feel happy or actually save your life.
