The 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games will officially take place later this year and the new dates for the competition have been announced. Earlier this month, CrossFit̵
The games now consist of two separate phases. The first is a remote competition for the 30 women and 30 men qualifying, where they participate in the events at home under strict parameters, likely similar to the CrossFit Open format, streamed online. Athletes from 16 countries should take part in this qualification phase. This is followed by a personal finals in California for the five best men and five best women of the first stage. The winners who will receive the World’s Strongest Man and Strongest Woman titles will emerge from this final stage.
Now we know exactly when the events should take place. The online competition will be broadcast live from Friday, September 18, and will last two to three days. The personal television finale will be held in Northern California the week of October 19-25. (Prior to the pandemic, the Games were originally scheduled for July 29th to August 2nd.)

The future of the Reebok CrossFit Games 2020 looked uncertain earlier this year. The games have been relocated from Madison, Wisconsin to Aromas, California, and it has been announced that spectators will not be allowed to attend the event. Then CrossFit said only the top 20 men and women to the Open would be invited to minimize the risk of spreading coronavirus. Internal turmoil within CrossFit headquarters also called the Games into question after senior athletes announced their intention to boycott the competition after founder and former CEO Greg Glassman made racist statements and revelations about sexist behavior. That pressure, along with a mass exodus of partners and sponsors, forced Glassman to step down and sell the company to Roza.
However, following Roza’s announcement in early August, the state of the competition seemed more hopeful.
“The 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games are a breeze,” the CrossFit CEO said in a statement. “At CrossFit, we’re always excited about a challenge, and hosting a global sporting event in the age of COVID is no exception. We’re excited to bring the CrossFit Games to our athletes, fans, and CrossFit 158 members.” Countries through a two-tier format that combines a global online competition with a small personal final in Northern California. This innovative format will help us protect the safety of our athletes while delivering a premium gaming experience to identify the best people in the world. “
The full list of competitors for the first phase has not yet been announced. Stay tuned to see if Mat Fraser looks to continue his tenure on the podium as Fraser would battle for an unprecedented fifth straight title this year.
