There are many reasons to love autumn: football. Turkey. Trot Turkey. Carve pumpkin. Leaf is looking (oh come on, you know you love it). And of course the enormous variety of creative pumpkin beers that are popping up in stores right now.
It may seem strange that the pumpkin – and no other seasonal vegetable – is causing such a widespread explosion of craft beer creations. But when you really think about it, the popularity of pumpkin beer makes sense.
“The great thing about pumpkin is that it leaves a lot to the interpretation of the brewer,” says Matt Simpson, The Beer Sommelier. “Pumpkin is not a very self-conscious vegetable, so it can be as intense or as humble as the brewer intends it to be.”
Which means that pumpkin encourages a beer without it overtaking the other more subtle flavors. Brewers can also improve the taste of the pumpkin by adding more of it to the brewing process, or recall it by protecting the pumpkin.
Pumpkin also goes particularly well with a whole range of other autumn flavors: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and other baking spices.
This also makes it very easy to combine pumpkin beers with food: pumpkin beer with pumpkin pie, pumpkin beer with grilled sausages, pumpkin beer with turkey, and so on.
Thank you, brewers, for putting together these 15 unique, insanely delicious seasonal dishes. Since pumpkin beers have been in the market for a while, it’s worth seeing what’s new and what’s worth revisiting.
