The commander of the US Air Force F-35 demo team, Andy "Dojo" Olson, has released a new version of a cockpit video, first released in May. The new video shows Dojo as a running comment when he flew over Miami Beach on the Hyundai Air & Sea Show 2019. Explaining each maneuver in detail, Olson explains what the jet does as its hands fly over the jet's control systems.
The video shows how Olson puts the Joint Strike Fighter through its paces from 750 knots to just 50 knots. The pilot also exposes the aircraft to strenuous flight maneuvers and experiences G forces of up to 9 g.
The jet launches a series of high-energy maneuvers to warm up the crowd and a High Alpha Half Cuban. High Alpha is a technical term for Angle while "Half Cuban" is a number eight. In the simplest sense, the F-35 shows a nose-up eight, and not necessarily in the direction the jet actually flies. At the "top" of the eight, the jet only reaches 50 knots, or about 57 miles per hour.
After that, the F-35 makes a tight turn and balances at 500 feet, with the two inner gun shafts opening. After a pass over the beach, Dojo puts the jet on his tail and accelerates straight ahead to "kill all the air speed I can". The stunning Miami Beach skyline, full of skyscrapers and condominiums, can easily be seen in the distance.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the F-35 flight demo is the "pedal turn", which appears from the cockpit as a climb and then a steep jump with the jet in a flat turn. Here's what it looks like from the outside:
