- Taika Waititi has been confirmed to direct and write a new Star Wars film.
- Waititi is an Oscar winner (for Jojo Rabbit) who, with 2017 Thor: Ragnarok, helped revive Thor's character and franchise.
- In addition to his upcoming Star Wars film, Waititi is also working on Thor: Love and Thunder, which is slated for release in early 2022.
Hopefully you have a great fourth of May because Taika Waititi (and probably everyone who works at Lucasfilm) is certain. After a few months of rumors, the Star Wars social media feed officially announced that Waititi, the Thor: Ragnarok writer and director would do the same two jobs for a new original Star Wars feature film. He is accompanied on the writing side of 1
It won't be Waititi's first experience in the Star Wars world; He directed the first season finale of The Mandalorian and pronounced the bounty hunt droid IG-11 in three of the season's eight episodes. In fact, he often has a double duty while directing – in Thor: Ragnarok, he pronounced the very funny Alien Korg and played Hitler in his latest film, The Satire of World War II Jojo Rabbit, who earned him the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay earlier this year.
Waititi is now widely regarded as one of the freshest and most exciting voices in storytelling films. Before he was the man behind the comedic "restart" of the Thor franchise in Ragnarok, Oscar winner, and typed for his own Star Wars Waititi made a name for itself as a director of smaller comedies. He made four episodes of HBO's cult favorite Flight of the Chonchords and had his big break in 2014 with the comedic vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows.
He starred in the film alongside Jemaine Clement, which he also directed in Conchords. And if this title seems familiar to you, it's because you've probably seen at least a few ads for it lately – the film was translated into an FX series of the same name (of which Waititi shot three episodes).
Waititi had previously said that he was not working on a Star Wars film; he referred to it by saying "Psych!" after the announcement of Star Wars .
Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi seemed excited that Waititi had a chance to tell a story in a distant galaxy. He also referred to another new project that was announced, a Disney + series by Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland. "I have no idea what kind of SW will come out of the brains of Taika, Krysty and Leslye if I try to guess I'm wrong, and that's the most exciting thing I can imagine," he wrote.
Waititi's Star Wars film is announced while production of his latest Marvel venture Thor: Love and Thunder which was announced last year, is still ongoing. This film has not yet started filming, but has already put together an epic cast: Hagnworth and Tessa Thompson from Ragnarok will return, and Christian Bale, a returning Natalie Portman, and yes, Waititi pronounced Korg again. This film was originally scheduled to be released in November 2021. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, a premiere is now planned for February 2022.
Given Waititi's commitments to love and thunder and the ongoing pandemic, we are unlikely to see this newly announced project soon. Still, it's fun to imagine what this film could be about. The subject should be something that can capture the same comedic tone that he nailed down so thoroughly in Ragnarok. Maybe a Poe Dameron spinoff? We're going to take a Poe Dameron spinoff. Maybe these could be completely new characters. We take that too. Really, it's all good. Let's just do it. We are ready.
