Cow's milk is full of amazing nutrients: the darling of childhood contains a healthy dose of protein, calcium and vitamin D in an 8-ounce glass, all for a small price of about 150 calories.
Milk milk has increased by 61 percent since 2012, according to research by Mintel. One in five Americans say they consume less dairy for health reasons, the report said. For example, if you have difficulty digesting lactose or believe dairy products can trigger your acne, it may be better to try a milk alternative.
But if you dismiss the nutritional information, dairy-free milk has a hard time competing with conventional cow's milk, mainly because of its protein difference.
And how do you choose the best herbal milk in the market? That's what researchers from McGill University wanted to find out. In their recent review in the 19459007 Journal of Food Science and Technology they compared the pros and cons of a 240-milliliter serving (about an 8-ounce glass) of unsweetened soymilk, rice milk and coconut milk and almond milk.
They found that soymilk came on top. This is because soymilk contains the most non-dairy protein and, at 8 grams (about the same as cow's milk), contains an average of only 95 calories. The soymilk also contains isoflavones, a herbal substance that can fight the growth of cancer cells, the researchers say.
Phytoestrogens (the family of herbal hormones, which include isoflavones) are also associated with a drop in testosterone if you have been too depressed – but before you freak out, you know that up to four servings a day is not a big deal Men's Health Nutritionist Alan Aragaon, MS This was previously explained to us.
The disadvantage? Soymilk has a "beany" taste that may be a hindrance to some people, the researchers say. In addition, soy is one of the most common food allergens, especially in children.
Here the three other milk species examined have been compared.
