Selena Gomez didn’t always feel comfortable showing off her scars. But in a new photo shared on Instagram, the actress, singer, and now beauty entrepreneur, shows off the kidney transplant scar on her inner thigh.
“When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it was very difficult to show my scar first,” Gomez wrote on Instagram next to the photo of her posing in a bathing suit by a pool. “I didn’t want it to be in photos so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I’m more confident about who I am and what I’ve been through … and I’m proud of that. “
Gomez revealed her kidney transplant in 2017 as part of her lupus treatment, SELF previously reported. “I am very aware that some of my fans had noticed that I was lying low for part of the summer,”
According to the Mayo Clinic, lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when the body’s immune system begins to attack its own tissues and organs. About half of people with lupus develop kidney infection, explains the Mayo Clinic, which can lead to a condition called lupus nephritis. Symptoms of lupus nephritis include foamy urine, joint pain, swelling, and in some cases kidney failure, which may require dialysis or kidney transplantation, explains the National Institutes of Health.
Gomez first spoke publicly about living with the disease in a 2015 cover story Billboard. “I was diagnosed [autoimmune disease] Lupus and I went through chemotherapy, ”she said in an interview, addressing tabloid rumors about her stay in a rehab facility in Arizona. “That’s really what my break was about. I could have had a stroke. I really wanted to say: “You have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re an asshole. ‘But I was angry, I even felt the need to say that. It’s horrible to go to a restaurant and see the whole room when you know what they are saying. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again. “
