Rami Malek receives for his role as Freddie Mercury in the Oscar-nominated film Bohemian Rhapsody. While it's divided on whether the movie deserves the title of "Best Picture," we can agree that the music in the movie was amazing – after all, it's Queen's original hit catalog.
But one question keeps cropping up on Malek's turn as a legendary queen frontman:
Does Rami Malek actually sing in Bohemian Rhapsody ? ,
According to Rolling Stone Malek did his best to prepare himself for the role, including delving deep into the history of Mercury by watching every clip and every video he could get his hands on. He also worked with a movement coach to pin down his dance moves, and with a dialogue coach that set Mercury apart. He even wore denture teeth to mimic Mercury's famous overbite.
"He had a real insecurity about it," said Malek Rolling Stone . "When you look at him for an interview, you can see how often he tries to cover his teeth with his lips or with his hand."
But Malek could never reproduce this unique vocal (and who really could?) According to Rolling Stone most of the music in this film relies on vocals from Queen Master tapes or new recordings by Marc Martel, a Canadian Christian rock singer, who sounds incredibly similar to Mercury. 1
Producer Graham King was pleased with the results:" Literally you could close your eyes and it's Freddie, "said King Rolling Stone . "And that's a very difficult business."
All this blending and remastering was good for Malek, who told the New York Times "Nobody wants to hear me sing."
