Never Have I Ever the new Netflix original series by The Office star Mindy Kaling, loosely based on her own school years, follows teen Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) while going through the City navigates normal ups and downs of teenage life after a big loss. It may sound like a grim look, but the emotional storytelling is balanced with warmth and humor – not to mention a killer soundtrack.
And what would a confident teenage comedy drama be without a heartbreaker? Enter Paxton Hall-Yoshida.
A particularly memorable scene from the show, which played an outstanding role in the trailer of the show, is about a daydream sequence in which heartbreaker Paxton visits the main character Devi in her bedroom and takes off his T-shirt in one swift , flowing movement that reveals a torn body.
It's a knowingly exaggerated moment of pure teenage fantasy, and he's become semi-viral since the show's appearance on Netflix, with boys' videos of them sharing their own unfortunate attempts to recreate Paxton's gentle shirt-taking movement.
"It was like a moment for me," says Darren Barnet, who plays Paxton. "When I saw how many people do it, I had no idea that moving would lead to something like that."
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight the 29-year-old actor explains the hours of preparation that went into this single scene and how it ended almost catastrophically.
"They originally told me they wanted me to take it off from behind with one hand, and I kept choking," he says. "So I thought it won't work, man, it's around my neck, so I did it with my other arm, and they said yes, just do it as fast as you did. I went home and was like [whooshing sound]. It became like a muscle memory. "
