Call them the odd pair of the NBA. One is a loveable 7 & 3 "giant from Serbia named Boban Marjanovic. The other is a high-profile striker from Long Island, New York, named Tobias Harris. However, they have a few things in common: a love of basketball, a talent for good (but also comedic) dancing and a taste for foot-long sandwiches.
So with the support of a definite fast-casual food chain we are proud of fresh food. We recently met with the dynamic duo to chat about building muscle during the summer, about his favorite pre-game dishes, and about perhaps the strongest player in the entire league (the answer may surprise you). Oh, and we ask Boban about his upcoming appearance in John Wick: Chapter 3.
M & F : OK, suppose you can do just one exercise make basketball. What do you do?
BOBAN: Bench Press!
TOBIAS: Is that yours? I would probably have to go with the pullups ̵
BOBAN: OK, I'll change mine. I would do planks. Yes, I would certainly make boards because they work the whole body – legs, back, shoulders, core.
Which of you can hold a board longer?
BOBAN: I do not know, we never tried. We never compete, but Tobias is pretty strong and I think he would last longer. We can find out next week when we have a rest day.
TOBIAS: No, I will not do that on my day off.
Who is the strongest player of the Clippers?
TOBIAS: No, no, no. Marcin Gortat.
BOBAN: OK, yes.
TOBIAS: But, pound for pound, he would either have him, Patrick Beverley, and I would throw myself in that category.
What is league-wide? Who is the strongest player in the NBA?
TOBIAS: I think Aron Baynes. Aron Baynes is super strong.
This is an unexpected choice.
TOBIAS: Who would you say?
Hmm. The first thought is LeBron.
BOBAN: We do not say anything. No opinion for me. I can not decide because there are many strong people. In one exercise someone can be strong, in another exercise someone can be strong. And how someone is strong depends on what you measure. And I think you can never figure out who's the strongest because everyone has something.
What about the low season? If so, what are you doing?
TOBIAS: Yes, in the off-season you have plenty of time to use strength and conditioning programs. We both do a lot of squatting, deadlifting, bench press, and various core movements just to get stronger. That's three months to lock yourself in and gain strength. So we take that seriously. And then we also do cross-training. Boban makes MMA boxes.
BOBAN: Yes. In the off-season you have to work on everything. You can do things to improve your basketball skills. Ball handling, or to strengthen your legs and your core. For example, I've gained nearly 13 pounds this summer. I gained muscle throughout my body. I gained about six pounds of arms, five or six pounds of legs. My goal is to become even stronger this summer.
We've seen some pretty funny videos of guys taking spin lessons and dancing. What is a better form of cardiovascular?
TOBIAS: Spin class.
BOBAN: spin class. But dance, I sweat a lot.
So what are you doing with Subway?
BOBAN: We Love Subway
TOBIAS: Yes, we're doing the Golden Ticket Sweepstakes, and we've started the entire campaign. Subway awards these fantastic prizes to people who subscribe to their app and to people who go to Subway. And there are many chances to win – to go to the NBA All-Star Game, NHL All-Star Game, Rose Bowl and Daytona 500. Me and Boban, we are two close friends who love to make people excited and bring joy to people, and that's why we thought this would be a great thing just because we have the same vision that people feel feeling excited and happy.
What is your favorite submarine? Tobias: Boban is Mr. Chicken Teriyaki. And I make Veggie Delite myself and I tell them to get some bread.
This is a good step to cut carbohydrates. Are you a vegetarian, Tobias?
TOBIAS: I do not eat red meat. But every now and then I'm open to it. During the season, I am very special with the foods that I put into my body for my performance, and so I eat a lot of herbal meals.
BOBAN: It works for him and he counts all night and plays well on the court. I sometimes eat with him this kind of food.
TOBIAS: Boban does not like my vegetable food.
BOBAN: Yes, but I support my friends. I can eat everything. And if the food works for him and he feels good, sometimes I try and it's good.
What's your favorite meal before the game?
BOBAN: And zucchini.
TOBIAS: No zucchini in it. Boban, what's your predecessor
BOBAN: I would say pasta with chicken, tomato sauce and mushrooms And some soup.
TOBIAS: Boban loves soup.
BOBAN: Yes, Boban loves soup. I like all types. I eat everything. But my favorite: butternut squash.
TOBIAS: He loves it.
Is this your secret weapon?
No, my secret weapon is still secret. Boban, we hear that you play an assassin in 19459013. John Wick: Chapter 3. Did you have a good time to film that?
BOBAN: Yes, I should be in there. Look in May, see it.
OK. Are you definitely in the movie?
BOBAN: I hope so.
Did you team up with Keanu?
BOBAN: Yes, with Keanu, yes.
For both of you – if someone would play you in a movie, who would that be?
BOBAN : Brad Pitt for sure.
TOBIAS: Denzel Washington for me.
BOBAN: For Tobias Samuel Samuel Jackson
] Incidentally, that's the only black actor he knows.
Who looks better?
BOBAN : Of course, Tobias
TOBIAS : Thank you very much, I appreciate it.
BOBAN: I do not know why I say that because he's still not married and I'm married.
TOBIAS: Yes, Boban, he can not. You can barely put a newspaper under him.
BOBAN: I have more blocks than Tobias.
Tobias: He has more blocks and more dunks. He is definitely up there.
What are your tips for someone who wants to improve their vertical leap?
TOBIAS: Squats. You have to squat.
BOBAN: Squats and butternut squash.
TOBIAS: No, you have to do a lot of strength exercises and do everything about explosion and power. and squat and build the core. I think these are always accompanied by an improvement in the vertical jump.
BOBAN: Yeah, I did it all and it does not work. No, I agree.
During the season, you fly throughout the country and play almost every night. How many times can you get into the weight room?
TOBIAS: Probably at least four times a week.
BOBAN : Maybe sometimes more for me because I like spending time there.
TOBIAS: I raise game days. That's the big thing that helped me and my career, and I like doing that.
How important is it for you to be the best team in Los Angeles? Do you know, the purple and yellow squad with the new guy from Cleveland think?
TOBIAS: Honestly, let's be the best team we can play in the league. So we're not just focusing on one area, we want to be a playoff team, and we want to be ready for everyone we play against every night. And so that's where our mindset is.
Cool. What else you want to say to the readers of Muscle & Fitness
TOBIAS: You can tell them that Boban has 5.2% body fat. He is true. He has no body fat.
Wow. What about you, Tobias?
TOBIAS: 7.9%. Not too shabby for someone who was a chubby boy as a young man.
Do you measure your body fat fairly regularly with the Clippers?
TOBIAS: Maybe monthly.
Nice. Well, we should get out better, because we have to go to the subway and then have to take some butternut squash.
TOBIAS: Let's go.
