In 2014, Groff starred in HBO's Looking . The show followed a group of gay friends who lived in San Francisco. Looking was canceled after two seasons, but had to close in 2016 with a television movie.

Groff played Woodstock organizer Michael Lang in Ang Lee's 2009 film about the true story of the 1969 festival. However, there were some debates about the factual accuracy of some of the plot points.
