Earlier on Friday morning, President Donald Trump announced in a tweet that both he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19. Later on Friday morning, former Vice President and current Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden announced that both he and his wife Jill Biden had tested negative for the virus.
In a Twitter message, Biden wrote, “I’m happy to report that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID. Thank you everyone for your worrisome messages. Hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep your social distance, and wash your hands. “
Masks have been shown to reduce a wearer’s chances of contracting coronavirus. However, during the first presidential debate on Tuesday, Trump had angered Biden about his mask use, saying, “I don’t wear face masks like that. Every time you see him he’s got a mask. He could speak 200 feet away … and he shows up wearing the biggest mask I’ve ever seen. ”
It remains unclear whether Trump was infected on Tuesday, the day of the debate. Both Trump and Biden stood on stage eight feet apart, despite being in the hall together for at least two hours.

Although President Trump was tested prior to Tuesday’s debate, the virus could still have incubated, meaning that even though his test was negative at the time, he could still have been infected and contagious with the virus.
Similarly, the Biden’s negative test on Friday does not erase any possibility that this status could change. Johns Hopkins researchers found that the most commonly used coronavirus test was most likely positive eight days after exposure and three days after symptoms appeared.
Biden’s runner-up, Senator Kamala Harris, also tested negative for the virus on Friday.
Both have sent their wishes to the President and the First Lady. Biden wrote on Twitter that he and Jill “send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a quick recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the President and his family. “
