Jeep Grand Wagoneer returns as a full-size luxury SUV valued at over $ 100,000

  • The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is back, this time as a full-size luxury SUV paired with the Ram 1500 pickup.
  • Jeep is showing it off in concept form with a plug-in hybrid powertrain at first, but the production car probably won’t be that different from what you see here.
  • The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will start production in mid-2021 and should be between $ 60,000 and over $ 100,000.

The new Jeep Grand Wagoneer represents many things for the Jeep: the return of an iconic nameplate, the brand’s first three-row model since the long-forgotten Commander, and the only FCA player in the highly profitable full-size SUV space.

Before the real Grand Wagoneer goes into production at the FCA assembly plant in Michigan next summer, we̵

7;ll be given a thinly wrapped concept version that says a lot about the exterior and interior design of the new model, although many of its powertrain specifications and mechanical details are retained for the time being Clasp.

In essence, the Grand Wagoneer is an SUV version of the Ram 1500 full-size pickup. Both vehicles are built in a body-on-frame construction, but the Jeep uses independent rear suspension, as opposed to its pickup stablemate, which rides on a solid rear axle. The Wagoneer will likely be similar in size to the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, although the Jeep doesn’t have any dimensions yet. The standard Wagoneer version will be the main competitor to Chevys and GMCs, while the upscale Grand Wagoneer Jeeps featured here spearheads ambitions to compete with the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and even the top offerings from Mercedes and Range Rover.

As such, the Grand Wagoneer concept has the sassy design you would expect from a full-size luxury SUV: lots of chrome, massive 24-inch wheels, and intricate details in the lighting elements, badges, and grille (some of which) of course not reach production). Unfortunately, in the fully modern design of the new model, we don’t see any major influence of the legendary Wagoneer from earlier, and the body-colored C-pillars don’t help with the uncomfortably high proportions, especially at the rear.

Unless the interior of the Grand Wagoneer concept car is significantly unsatisfied for production, the comparisons between Mercedes and Range Rover are not that far-fetched. The cabin looks rich, modern and elegant, with a nice mix of wood and leather. The number of screens inside is absurd and includes a digital instrument cluster, upper and lower infotainment displays, rear entertainment screens on the back of the front seats, a screen between the second row seats for air conditioning and other functions, and even a screen on the dash especially for the passenger. According to Jeep, the Wagoneer will use a new version of FCA’s infotainment software called UConnect 5 and offer an optional premium audio system from McIntosh.

Three rows of seats are standard, with this concept version offering a seven-passenger configuration with captain’s chairs in the second row. We anticipate Jeep will also offer an eight-passenger second row bench seat, and the company claims the production version will have the best passenger volume in its class. It is currently unclear whether Jeep will offer two different wheelbase lengths as its main competitors do.

We only know what defines the Grand Wagoneer concept, that it is a kind of plug-in hybrid drive. The production model will likely share its powertrain offering with the Ram 1500, which would mean hybrid-assisted 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter V8 gas engines, and possibly a turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6. A plug-in hybrid version is sure to hit production as well. All-wheel drive will be standard, and Jeep says it will offer three different 4×4 systems and optional air suspension.

Jeep President Christian Meunier said fully loaded Grand Wagoneers will top $ 100,000, which sounds wild for any type of Jeep, but isn’t quite as crazy as it sounds given the existence of a Wrangler over $ 60,000. The standard Wagoneer will cost around $ 60,000, according to Meunier, while Jeep tries to cater to the wide range of customers who shop in the full-size SUV space. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will arrive at dealers from mid-2021. We look forward to learning more about the production versions of these new and significant Jeep models.
