After trying a meat diet for a few weeks, singer James Blunt developed signs of scurvy, a rare condition caused by severe vitamin C deficiency.
Blunt ate almost exclusively meat and spices for almost two months while studying engineering and sociology at the University of Bristol in the 1990s, he said in a recent interview about Table manners, a podcast about food from singer Jessie Ware.
Dieting was a bit of a trick; an effort to maintain a sort of masculinity in classes that were far more women than men. His engineering classes were dominated by men. But in his sociology class, “there were 170 girls and only three boys, all of whom were vegetarian or vegan,”
But after about eight weeks, Blunt said he had become “very, very unhealthy.” So he decided to see a doctor who then told Blunt that he had developed symptoms of scurvy and that he was “lacking in vitamin C.” So Blunt started drinking a quart of orange juice every night, which caused him to develop acid reflux. “As you can see, food isn’t exactly my forte,” he joked.
Unfortunately, Blunt isn’t the only person to try a carnivorous “carnivore” diet, although he may have been a bit ahead of the trend. This type of diet, sometimes referred to as the zero-carb diet, usually requires people to avoid fruits, vegetables, and grains in favor of meat-heavy meals. Some people stick to it more strictly while others eat eggs and certain dairy products in addition to meat. It has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to some celebrities who have endorsed it, like Joe Rogan and Jordan and Mikhaila Peterson. But as SELF explained earlier, such a diet is likely not a good idea for your physical or mental health.
There are no scientifically proven benefits of a carnivore diet. But risks are many, including – you guessed it – nutritional deficiencies. You don’t necessarily have to need Eat fruits and vegetables to live, but they contain some important vitamins and nutrients that can be difficult to come by without eating these foods. And if you don’t eat enough of them, you can develop deficiencies and conditions related to those deficiencies, such as: B. Scurvy, which MedlinePlus suggests can cause gum disease, skin problems, a general feeling of weakness, and anemia.
While oranges and orange juice have a fair amount of vitamin C, they are by no means the only food that contains this essential vitamin, SELF explained previously. Other fruits like strawberries, pineapples, and papaya are also high in vitamin C. It’s also found in large quantities in vegetables like peppers, kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.
Of course, different ways of eating can work for different people – but only up to a point. If your diet is so restrictive that you cut out entire food groups and expose yourself to vitamin deficiencies for no medical reason, you should probably consult a doctor or registered dietitian for guidance. And if there is anything we can learn from Blunt’s experience, chances are that accidentally starting an ultra-restrictive diet like this one can have real health ramifications – especially when taken up in the name of a confused proposition about manhood.
