When English pro-wrestler Paige aka Saraya-Jade Bevis withdrew from the ring last April, she thanked her family in the UK. For those unfamiliar with their underdog history, it seemed like nothing more than a fleeting movement. Those who followed closely the WWE's 26-year-olds with WWE owe much to their parents, Sweet Saraya and Ricky Knight, "as well as her and Zak Zodiac and Roy Knight, to whom she was a part of wrestling history. The Fight with My Family was created by Dwayne Produced by "The Rock" Johnson's production company Seven Bucks is written and directed by Stephen Merchant, who co-designed the office and was portrayed by Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth ) lt is Lena Headey ( Ga me of Thrones ) as her mother and Nick Frost ( Hot Fuzz ) as her father. We talked to Paige to find out what it's like for The Rock to turn your life into a movie.
M & F: Dwayne Johnson has said that it was while filming Fast & Furious 6 in London that he was documenting about your family's local wrestler stumbled. What if one of your wrestling heroes contacted you to make a life-based movie?
PAIGE: I remember it was the day before RAW [in] 2014 (when Paige won the Divas Championship). He sat me down and said that he had seen the documentary, had fallen in love with my family and wanted to make a movie about it. It blew me away and I immediately started crying. And then he said, "Oh, and tomorrow you will debut and you will win the Divas Championship" – much like what happens in the movie. And I started crying even more. Then he said, "But do not tell anyone." When I left the room, I saw a girl I knew, and she asked me why I cried so much. I told her it was because I was such a big fan of The Rocks.
He also comes from a family of wrestlers. What do you think, is it your story that interested him?
It's just a wonderful underdog story. Someone described it as a "Celebration of the Inner Bankruptcy of a Human Being", who always keeps to your arms and you are yourself and have a dream that you can follow. And from somewhere [where] we did not have much money, and we did not live the high life, it's kind of a history of rags in the rich. It's just a beautiful story and I think it's inspiring for a lot of people. Be yourself, your superpower is. You can do everything you want to do. It does not matter what your background is or how you look or something similar. It's just an encouraging story.
What did you think when you first saw the movie at its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last month?
I have called my eyes. It was like an impossible search not to see the whole thing without bubbling. [Stephen Merchant] threw my family so perfectly. The biggest thing I love is Stephens Cameo. (He plays the restrained father of her brother's girlfriend.)
