In Eastern Medicine Even the role of doctors is different. Here you go to the doctor if you get sick. "In Chinese medicine, you have traditionally seen the doctor when you were well, and it was his job to keep you healthy," says Shari Auth, a Certified Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Practitioners like Auth take TCM from niche to mainstream. Through her practice in New York City, Wthn, it is as easy for acupuncture to be interested in acupuncture as to opt for lunchtime.
Large medical facilities, including Duke and the Mayo Clinic, have established these integrative medical clinics that may prescribe a long-standing anti-drug drug and a yoga class.
One of the key factors that characterizes eastern medicine is that it looks our body as with the universe connected. Chi (or Qi) describes the life force that flows through energy channels through the body. Blockages lead to pain and illnesses that can be alleviated by body work. In our bodies as well as in the universe there are Yin and Yang, two opposing forces where Yin is cool and Yang is hot. If you have an inflammation that is excessive heat, fresh fruits and vegetables (yin foods) help restore balance. When you are cold, hot soups or spices (yang foods) are the trick.
Next year, the World Health Organization will recognize TCM alongside Western practices. And insurance companies are starting to treat alternative practices that will help make them accessible to more people.
Now nobody should throw their beta blockers. TCM critics say there is insufficient clinical evidence. China was accused of poaching and torturing animals in the name of medicine ̵

You do not have to subscribe to all TCM, but it offers a useful way to think about health. It's not about being ill or not being ill. It's about creating a feel-good model, says Justin Laube, MD, at the Center for East-West Medicine at UCLA. "We all have the ability to prevent and heal ourselves," he says. "We need leaders."
Take a holistic view of your health and pay attention to all facets: sleep, nutrition, activity, social relationships, mental health – even finding meaning and joy. It is a lifelong task. "Taking care of your health is like a garden," says Laube. "You plant seeds, pour them and drink the bad. When you are older, you have a thriving, resilient garden.
TCM considers bodywork as a tool for resolving energy blockages. It is generally used by athletes, chronic pain patients and people with mental health problems. Even the military is beginning to promote medical acupuncture, including the training of medical professionals who can treat soldiers in the field for physical pain and trauma. Here are a few body exercises.
We all have this friend who swears by it. Maybe it's time to give it a try.
This is the figurehead of TCM. Needles are placed in the body to facilitate the flow of chi. Until recently, there was a niche atmosphere in the US. However, the number of acupuncture practitioners has almost doubled from 2012 to 2017 and continues to rise, according to a survey by the National Center for Health Statistics.
What is it used for? Many are trying for a specific condition – sports injuries, back pain, chemo side effects, migraines – or for general well-being, pain relief, energy and stress reduction. Even heroin addiction programs, including Penn North Recovery in West Baltimore, are being used.
Does it hurt? Not really. The needles used are thin – 40 of them could fit in a hypodermic needle. In some places, you may feel a little uncomfortable. If you are needle-hostile, remember that it is healing, not pain. some points are even reassuring
Does it work Studies say yes. A comprehensive study from the University of York in the UK shows that people receiving acupuncture for chronic pain, along with the usual medical care, achieve significantly better results. The healing is credited to the interaction itself. The practitioner asks for your well-being and gives you space to discuss what bothers you. Studies show that oxytocin is released on contact, a feel-good chemical that lowers cortisol to relieve stress. After the needles have been placed, lie still and meditate, which is good for your head. But leave out the pre-acupuncture Java. An animal study in Scientific Reports suggests that caffeine may decrease treatment sensitivity and inhibit pain relief. Cupping

It's like scratching away old paint – except on the skin.
This form of body work scrapes the skin just as you would blow air bubbles out of the wallpaper. Traditionally this is done with spoons, but modern practitioners use small wedges, often made of quartz. As with cupping, exercise can increase blood flow, loosen knots in the muscles, and relieve pain. If done vigorously, you will be left with purple "stripes" the next day, but they are not painful.
