Main causes of chapped lips
- Very dry air. "The environment plays a key role in skin hydration, and many will find that additional lip care is required in winter due to the lack of moisture," says Jordan Carqueville, MD, a Chicago dermatologist. Essentially, your lips contain humectants, molecules that pull moisture from the air into your skin. In dry winter, on the other hand, the moisture evaporates faster and you have dry, dry lips.

- Moisture lock. "Products that keep the water in the skin help to prevent water loss, such as softeners that contain mixtures of Vaseline, oils and waxes," says Dr. Carqueville.
