How the agent behind the biggest sports stars stays in shape



Casey Wasserman has a three year old photo on his iPhone. In it he stands next to NBA star Russell Westbrook.

Westbrook features the jacked arms and chiseled body. Wasserman? He’s a 200 pound PR maven. “I saw this picture,” he says, remembering the moment. “And I think I’m done. I have to change something. ‘”

The photo is Wasserman’s inspiration, and is what drives him as he sets off on a 20-yard sprint on his driveway that sunny Beverly Hills morning. It is the last run in a 45-minute mountain session. But the 46-year-old Wasserman is just starting his training.

He wakes up five days a week before sunrise and then trains with trainer Christine Khuri, which can last three hours. “As difficult as it is sometimes to get started, I just know how much better [I’ll feel] and how much more energy and focus I will have when I finish exercising, ”says Wasserman.

He needs that focus because he spends the working day doing dual duties, as chairman and CEO of Wasserman – a company that brokers advertising deals for people like Westbrook and Giancarlo Stanton – and as chairman of LA 2028, the committee’s job is prepare the city for the country 34th Olympiad. That means overseeing stores, NFL security Malcolm Jenkins landing two clothing lines in one moment, and studying plans for Olympic venues the next. And no, the Olympic preparation isn’t all fun, especially when Wasserman gets a brief overview of the traffic flow in rush hour.

Training clears your mind. That day, he walks from the hill to the gym – a 1,150-square-foot sweat zone that looks like a mini-equinox – and does five sets of wide-grip pull-ups. TRX rows, rows of dumbbells and bicep curls follow and let him massage his arms.

Wasserman didn’t train like that until three years ago. He had played tennis at a young age and was always active. But he had an intense travel schedule and frequented Europe, Asia, and South America. “I wore this badge of honor that I’ve traveled a lot and worked hard,” he says.

Just before the wake-up call in Westbrook, his doctor told him he was not in good shape. Wasserman knew he had to make some adjustments. He hasn’t missed a workout since then, dropping to 165 pounds, a weight he has been maintaining for 18 months. “I don’t want to find out what happens when you take your foot off the gas,” he says.

Wasserman is constantly finding new ways to power his body. On some days he goes beyond the limits of his breathing and flexibility with yoga. Or he does more mountain sprints. Shortly after social distancing was ordered in LA, Wasserman designed his own half marathon course through Beverly Hills. Anything, he says, to keep him from going back to his days before Westbrook. “In everything, that fear and that fear means that you care,” he says. “I care about my health.”
