That’s why I look for shoes that have adequate cushioning and stability support and that don’t sit too tightly around my foot. I also prefer shoes that don’t have too much arch support, as that extra cushioning can rub and irritate my almost non-existent arch. The Hoka Clifton Edge is an ideal shape for me. It’s a normal width that doesn’t feel too tight, has a roomy toe box, and offers plenty of cushioning without weighing me down or creating hot spots under my arch. Plus, the shape of the sole really sold me: the sole sticks out a bit and creates a flat, sturdy surface that really stabilizes me as I run without affecting my walkway or my ability to connect to the road.

The foam sole offers plenty of support, but I still feel like I can run fast, even on days when I’m feeling very sluggish and struggling through a run (something that was quite common during our sneaker testing phase and coincided with the level of summer humidity and heat in NYC). The shape of the shoe also allows me to feel the road while running, which is very important to me. I’ve worn a lot of shoes that offer plenty of cushioning, but don’t let them react to the road. This can affect my speed and make me feel like I’m fighting my run instead of getting involved. With the Clifton Edge, I still felt deep enough to get the responsiveness I need.

How my body felt during and after the activity

The Hoka Clifton Edge became my favorite running shoe immediately after my first run. When I run slowly or over long distances, my feet need quite a bit of padding, which sometimes makes it feel like I am sneaking through a run. The Clifton Edge didn’t do anything like that. It’s hard to overstate how light these shoes feel, even when I feel like I’m dragging my feet. As I run up my running miles and get fit again it can be frustrating to feel like I am struggling against my body, the road, or my breath. A lot of the shoes I tested for our Sneaker Awards contributed to that feeling that I was struggling to find my crotch, but the Clifton Edge didn’t. At this point in my life, having enough cushioning to reduce the effects of running on my body and joints is non-negotiable. With the Clifton Edge, I never felt like the support I needed to do it was hindering me in any way.

Our experts said a shoe company’s return policy should be an important factor when looking for shoes, especially if you buy them online without seeing them. Hoka earns points in this regard – the company allows you to return a product within 60 days, even if you have worn it (extended from 30 days due to the pandemic). That means you have time to test all the shoes you order online to see if they suit you. This is a huge plus and I’m glad Hoka is offering this policy. Unless you’re buying directly from the brand, be sure to check the return and exchange policies of the retailer you choose.

The bottom line

If you’re looking for a shoe that cushions you without weighing you down, the Clifton Edge is an excellent choice. The Edge gives you the best of both worlds – a little support and cushioning for long or slow runs with a responsiveness that helps you feel fast. Since testing, the Clifton Edge has been my first choice for all of my runs as I slowly and steadily work my way back to my normal mileage. The versatility of the shoe and the beginner-friendly handling have made it a pleasure to get back into running again.
