Gear Guide: The Core Fusion Craze becomes a cardio

The term Craze applies to so many trends, but the core fusion phenomenon of Exhale Spa, with its ever growing classes, DVDs, and celebrities, actually deserves the title. Your Just-Out Title Cardio – Pure Intensity is the first obvious DVD foray into the world of heart pounding, well, heart. I had to try it.

If you lived under a rock, the Core Fusion method is based on a combination of core conditioning, Pilates, ballet-inspired movements, and yoga. This "new" DVD is actually a reissue of many Core Fusion staples. The five 1

0-minute training segments (plus a stretch section) – as always led by the sympathetic co-founders Fred DeVito and Elisabeth Halfpapp – draw from traditional core fusion classes and trains that are performed only at a faster pace. Translation: Do not expect pure cardiovascular training, because there is a lot of power there too. It makes your heart pump, yes, but not the way it would be if you walked or walked or danced.

The segments should be in the correct order (build on each other). So if you have time, say, two of them, choose 2 and 3 or 3 and 4 or 4 and 5. Note that I did not include the first segment, Energy Moves. In this case, it's all about warming up and stretching. So if you only have 20 minutes to spray a few calories, it will not matter. (Just do a quick warm-up alone.)

A few words to the wise: First, if you want to use dumbbells (instead of following the lovable second-row woman who is without weight) modifications, make sure that they are a maximum of 2 or 3 pounds (unless you are already seriously buff). The lightest ones I had were 5-pounders, and they stepped. My. Butt. (Well, at least until I leave her a few times, she moves in.)

Second, you like mountaineers, because no matter which training you choose, you'll make a lot of it. This is not necessarily a bad thing – they are an excellent whole body movement that focuses on your core and increases the heart rate – but it gets a bit repetitive.

Third, you know the following: The Cardio Curl This segment is all about abdominal muscles, and you keep your shoulders up pretty much the entire 10 minutes – even the breaks are supported on the elbows. If this does not set your abdominal muscles on fire, you are obviously fast forwarded.

Precautions aside, this is a solid option for those days when you only have 20 minutes to work out and are torn between your heart and your circulation and strength. Why choose when you can do both?
