Gear Guide: Dancing with the stars DVD

I love to dance, although I rarely do it. That's probably the reason why, although I have rhythm, it may take me a while to get used to the steps. When the latest Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) DVD, Cardio Dance for Weight Loss came to my desk, she exclaimed, "Perfect for beginners! No partner needed! "I could not wait to get home, pull the carpet back into the cave, and do a move.

The DVD features samba, salsa, and swing routines routed by two long-running DWTS programs Instructor: Kym Johnson (she teamed up with singer Donny Osmond and football player Hines Ward for first place in the squadrons 9 and 12) and Mark Ballas (who helped the Olympians Kristi Yamaguchi and Shawn Johnson bring the coveted Spiegel ball home in the seasons 6 and 8).

First, the good part: These routines make you sweat even if you do not understand the steps correctly. You are constantly on the move, so your heart rate goes up and stays there. And it's fun … sometimes.

Why do you sometimes ask yourself "someday"? For each style, Kym and / or Mark deliver three multi-level combinations in just 15 minutes, and I kept wishing they had not tried to stuff so much in such a short time. You have little time to learn a step before you move on to the next step – no good attitude for beginners and something that has prompted me, every time I'm frustrated, "slow! a few minutes. Seriously, halving the steps by half would have been a game changer for me.

There's also a limited specific instruction, and both coaches assume you know terms like "kickball change." "Locking" and "Pas de Bourree." I'm not doing anything. Granted, the warm-up is cleverly intended as an intro to some of the basic steps for every dance style, but these basics just bring you so far.

Do not get me wrong: The routines are funny and alive, and I can totally see how an experienced dancer would enjoy the heck of this DVD. As far as I'm concerned, I'll be looking for a more beginner-friendly dance forum. Perhaps a return to Zumba is fine …
