Electronic cigarettes, often called e-cigarettes, are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid (usually not always containing nicotine) and turn it into an inhalable vapor. The use of e-cigarettes is often referred to as steaming.
Electronic cigarettes are available in different versions. Some are sold with filled cartridges, others are designed so that users can add a separately purchased solution. The solutions usually contain vegetable glycerine or propylene glycol as the main ingredients, varying amounts of nicotine, flavorings and other additives.
Are e-cigarettes safe?
There is no scientific evidence that the use of e-cigarettes is safe. 19659005] Since e-cigarettes do not burn tobacco, most experts agree that they are likely to have less harmful effects than traditional cigarettes. Most manufacturers of e-cigarettes claim that their products are a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has questioned the safety of these products.
Researchers have found that some e-cigarettes have levels of nicotine that are very different from those found on the label. In addition, some flavorings and other additives have proven to be toxic.
The long-term health effects of inhaling vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and other additives are unknown. The FDA and many health organizations, including the American Heart Association, have issued warnings about the health risks of e-cigarettes.
Will e-cigarettes help me quit smoking?
Studies That Can Show If E-cigarettes Can Help People who stop consuming tobacco have had inconsistent results. At best, e-cigarettes are no more effective than nicotine replacement drugs to help people exit.
The US Preventive Services Working Group has found that current evidence is insufficient to recommend electronic nicotine delivery systems for adult cessation of smoking.
