Celebrity chefs share their recipes online during quarantine to inspire both new and seasoned chefs to try new things in the kitchen. Chef Art Smith inspires people in a different way by sharing his weight loss journey online for all to see. Since February, Art has lost 70 pounds thanks to a friend who came to visit before the health crisis started.

Art specializes in Mediterranean cuisine and was Oprah’s personal chef until 2007. In February, before official bans were introduced in the US, Art’s friend Lucas Cancelier paid a visit. Lucas is a rugby player and fitness trainer from Argentina. During his visit, he decided it would be safer to stay with Art’s family in Florida rather than flying home during the pandemic.

Since then, Lucas has been helping Art achieve new fitness goals while in quarantine. Art told TODAY that he has struggled with his weight in the past and believes his looks also reflect his work in the kitchen. In 2008, Art was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

“If you go to a restaurant and see a chef who looks heavy or sloppy, what do you think? You might think the food is going to be heavy and sloppy,” Art said TODAY. “I think this applies to everything. You have to be good to yourself and take care of yourself to be a good businessman.”

While being quarantined with Lucas, the two began working together towards Art’s fitness goals. Art initially set a goal of losing 30 pounds, but has since lost 70. “On February 1, 2020, a friend from Argentina came to visit and saved my life,” Art wrote in an Instagram post in early May.

Lucas put together simple training plans for Art and combined them with a quick jog during the day. Art has also reduced processed sugar and sweet treats, which he wants to incorporate in his kitchen as well. The chef has posted “Healthy and Comfortable Cooking” tips on his Instagram, showing mindful versions of dishes like mac & cheese, pizza and pasta. Regarding his running fitness goals, he hopes to run the Walt Disney World Marathon as soon as possible.
