Can green tea help you lose weight?

Is green tea good for weight loss? Research on humans and animals point to a resounding "kind". What this means:

There is evidence that green tea can help you lose weight.

A series of small but serious clinical studies has shown that overweight people in green tea – either drinkable or extract – lost more weight than people who did not. Science As science is, there are also some studies that showed no benefit from green tea drinks or nutritional supplements. Overall, "I would say it can help modestly," says Kristin Kirkpatrick, R.D.N., counselor for Integrative Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.

In studies that found a weight loss benefit with green tea, there was a "trend toward weight loss" or tea drinkers lost "significantly" more. But it's usually not a total transformation. For example, a small study conducted at Oklahoma State University found that people who drank green tea or ate green tea extract in addition to their diet lost over 8 weeks more than people who drank water. Some studies suggest that caffeine-free green tea may also benefit.

Green tea can even help you lose belly fat.

An older study found that in people who regularly ate and exercised 1

80 minutes a week, those who drank a drink with the most biologically active compounds in green tea, the so-called catechins, had a greater percentage change in abdominal fat than humans who got a drink without catechins.

Why It Might Work

There are a number of theories about why green tea – especially the main catechin called epigallocatechin gallate – could help you a bit if you want to lose weight.

"It is possible that catechins in green tea actually inhibit the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates," Kirkpatrick cites a report in the journal Scientific Reports which reports a lower absorption of carbohydrates after settling a green tea. Extract showed.

"I think some of the most promising are looking at the effects of green tea on the microbiome," she says. Research is increasingly finding that it alters the microbiome of the gut, and these changes could make it helpful for losing pounds.

Matcha Can Help

Kirkpatrick gets a lot of questions from her clients asking if trendy matcha is as useful as green tea. "There have not been a lot of studies on matcha alone," she says. However, it is reasonable to think that it is just as useful as green tea comes out of the leaves of the plant and matcha is made from the ground plants.

While numerous studies have focused on green tea extracts, Kirkpatrick is calling for people to extract their green tea from the actual tea itself. "In the greatest possible form".

It's not just about weight loss.

There are more reasons than weight to drink green tea. Kirkpatrick points out the "impressive benefits of green tea and cancer prevention". And then there are heart benefits, potential memory benefits and other health-promoting factors in the countryside.

"Weight loss is so diverse; Green tea does not guarantee weight loss, "says Kirkpatrick. But as long as: you did not receive a sugared version of the material; Green tea does not affect any medications you take. and you do not look for it being a panacea for weight loss, then go ahead and drink.
