Brian Shaw shares his bodybuilding-style back workout at a public gym

Strong Brian Shaw tends to stick around training at his epic home gym, re-pressing the bar, bench pressing in the NFL Combine, and squeezing deadlifts. But he does a stunt every now and then – he stopped at a Planet Fitness with Robert Oberst just last month. More recently, he has ventured into back training with bodybuilders Big Boy, seven-time Mr. Olympia Flex Lewis and Dana Linn Bailey.

But with so many people around him and nothing but machines around, he stayed on the sidelines to see his friends come after.

“I’m doing the bro hangout training right now,” he says as he watches his friends at the machines.

“There̵

7;s a line!” says Bailey, who works on reverse pec flys on a machine.

Shaw then tries to do what Bailey did, but he’s almost too big for the machine.

Lewis is on the lat pulldown machine and Shaw meets it after he’s done.

Next he wants to try the Hammer Strength range, but Shaw is almost too tall to fit.

“The question is whether I can fit into this hammer strength range,” says Shaw. “We’ll find out very quickly.”

And he adjusts by doing some repetitions with Lewis instructing him to “pull slowly” and different repetition patterns than Shaw is used to. And the real work begins.

“It’s different for me. Usually everything is explosive,” says Shaw. “It’s hard to pause and not be too explosive.”

Lewis explains that he trains for muscle confusion, and Shaw loves it.

“When you go to that pain threshold, your brain tells you to stop and stop and stop. But if you keep asserting yourself, your body can do a lot more than your brain tells you can do.” says Shaw. “If you push that extra level, you win or lose.”

He moves on to more lat pulldowns and then a playful set of super light bicep curls to get ready.
