Small details make Apple Watch Series 6

The Series 6 retains the same size and shape as the Series 4 and 5, with 40mm and 44mm case options. I tested one of the new colors, a subtle blue, while Apple’s long-standing (PRODUCT) RED collaboration also includes the watch (there are new stainless steel options too, but they’ll bring you a lot more cash than the standard aluminum models). The screen display is clear and bright, and controlling the device is a breeze thanks to the fast new chip. The always-on feature introduced in last year’s Series 5 is also brighter, so you can check the face at a glance, which has surprised me over the days. The extra light is a small detail but a useful one.

A new design change came to the watch’s most important accessory: the strap. The new Solo Loop straps, made of either silicone or braided material in different colors, have a new, slightly twisted size system for a lock-free fit. I switched between the two materials during my testing and loved the seamless feel of both materials. This was another little design crease that I never knew I needed, especially when wearing the watch during exercise with a lot of wrist flexion and extension (pushups, presses, etc.) and even during some intense basketball games. The switch to a buckle smartwatch band was more noticeable than ever. But the solo bands are sold separately and aren’t cheap ($ 49 and $ 99). If you want to get Series 6 without breaking the bank, you have to pass.

The last little remarkably useful trait I came across in everyday life plays the same role as my conscientious mother when I was a kid. Hand wash, part of the watchOS 7 software in this new normal, is activated whenever you start lathering thanks to the device’s sensors. You can feel subtle haptic bumps when the timer runs out – and you’ll be cursed (with an on-screen message) for not scrubbing for the full 20 seconds. The Apple Watch can now track sleep with watchOS 7, a feature that other wearables have been able to do for quite some time. The watch has been turned into a full-fledged nighttime routine tool, with options to create routines to help you relax before bed, reminders of when to hit the pillow, and more. The tracking itself, which records the time you’ve been sleeping and your heart rate, isn’t as detailed as that of competitors like Fitbit, which can break your sleep into phases.

However, this is a big deal for Apple Watch owners who otherwise relied on third-party apps to get a glimpse of their sleep. Likewise, the integration with iOS made it a lot easier for me to keep track of my routine on my phone as I was reminded at 11:35 a.m. every night that it was time to beat the hay.

Run Tracking is a standout feature that makes it easy to check the stimulation data at a glance, and I also had a good time tracking some bike rides.

The biggest new feature for fitness on the watch is still pending, however. The Apple Fitness + Streaming Workout platform is slated for launch later this year. Requires Apple Watch Series 3 or higher to use (new watch buyers get three months free once they become available). We got some firsthand details about the new company from the team behind the project, but there is still no word on when the workouts will go live.

Overall, the Apple Watch is such a good smartwatch because it is so easy to use. The integration with iOS is seamless, and the apps I actually used on my wrist – Nike Run Club, Google Maps, and first-party features like Timers – actually worked with no issues. This is not always the case with other smartwatches.

I have no doubt that I will keep coming back to the station.

That doesn’t mean the device is perfect and not for everyone. Battery life is one area where the Series 6 still lags behind the competition. Apple estimates that you can get 18 hours of juice on a full charge, which pales in comparison to others that can take days or even weeks. This is especially frustrating for sleep tracking (you’ll get a notification when the clock is below 30 percent before bed), but at least the Series 6 charges faster than previous models. Just make sure you have your cable handy.

The Series 6 is expensive for the general consumer as well – but this year Apple has another new, lower-cost option in the wings. The Apple Watch SE offers many of the same features as the Series 6 (excluding the highest health measures, EKG and SpO2, and the Series 6 chip) and starts at $ 279. I haven’t tested the device, but after wearing the Series 5 extensively (the SE uses the same chip) I think it works very well too.

Apple uses eye-catching design and simple performance to keep users of its products and the Series 6 is no different. I have no doubt that I’ll keep coming back to the watch this year, even if I have to charge it more often than other devices I also like to wear. If you use an iPhone, there is no better smartwatch. In a year that was far from predictable, the Series 6 was a welcome continuation of the norm.
