The researchers agree that sagging mattresses (think of a waterbed and overly soft foam) are less suitable for back pain, according to a Danish study. Some even say that medium-hard mattresses are superior to solid mattresses to reduce certain back pain. Regardless of what science says, it depends on personal preference.
"Comfort is king," says Whitley. "Take time at the store or department store and get a real feel for the bed, try your preferred sleeping position and draw a conclusion, and remember: often your first impression will be accurate."
The sleeping position can also play a large part of how your back feels in the morning. Just like strength, this is a personal preference. "The optimal position for each individual is different," says Whitley. "It is important to avoid positioning [pain-inducing] by supporting yourself with pillows."
For example, if you are sleeping on your stomach, place a pillow under your hips to prevent excessive lumbar extension. If you are sleeping on your back, place a pillow under your knees to keep the pelvis centered. If you are a side sleeper, try putting a pillow between your legs to prevent your hips from diving into your hips. The idea is that your spine does not get crooked at the end of its range of motion.
Last but not At least we can not forget the rest temperature. Sleeping too warm may cause you to throw and turn frequently, resulting in a less than ideal resting quality.
