It has always been assumed that milk is a rich source of nutrients. However, this belief is slightly different from the truth, because not all types can be considered healthy.
Time to Recognize the Truth
For most of our lives, we have only seen milk as cow-borne white fluid laden with vital nutrients for the body. But most of our lives we did not recognize the truth. Milk has its varieties and not all varieties are the same. So how do you decide which milk is beneficial and which is not, especially for your heart?
Organic cow's milk
Cow's milk has 146 calories, 5 grams of saturated fat and 24 milligrams of cholesterol per serving. Whole cow's milk contains more anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids than conventional milk, which is necessary for a healthy heart.
Unpasteurized milk, commonly known as raw cow's milk, carries the same amount of calories, saturated fats and cholesterol as conventional milk. However, the absence of the essential pasteurization process makes raw milk unsuitable for pregnant women and children.
For lactose intolerant people, soy milk can be a useful alternative. It contains 80 calories and only 4 grams of fat per serving. Because soymilk is derived from a plant, it contains no cholesterol, a negligible amount of saturated fat, and 7 grams of protein per serving. This is necessary for your heart to function properly.
Almonds are healthy for the heart, which is why almond milk is strongly recommended. Unsweetened almond milk contains between 30 and 40 calories per serving and contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. However, to ensure the health of your heart, you only have to stick to the unsweetened version.
Hemp milk is one of the newer versions of milk available on the market. Although it is derived from cannabis plants, it does not contain any THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Hemp milk is strongly recommended for lactose intolerant people or people suffering from soy allergies. A cup of hemp milk contains 80 calories, 0.5 grams of saturated fat and no cholesterol.
As a natural sweetener added to beverages and foods, coconut milk contains only 45 calories in an 8-ounce glass. Although one cup of unsweetened coconut milk contains 4 g of saturated fat, the majority consists of medium chain fatty acids.
Despite Low Calories Since there is no saturated fat or cholesterol content, rice milk is not a healthy choice for your heart due to its high carbohydrate level. In addition, rice milk is also very low in protein.
