11 black-owned beauty brands you need on your radar

I was obsessed with beauty products in my early teens after buying the book from Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty . However, in the majority of my younger years, I had to search the limited shelves for "ethnic" products at my local drugstore to find brands that matched my specific beauty needs – from foundations that actually match my skin color, to conditioners that help with the handling of my coils.

Brands that were developed exclusively by Farbigen ̵

1; like older brands like Aphogee and Iman Cosmetics – have long been known, but were really hard to find. The rise of the internet and electronic retail has helped, but our culture has changed as well. "With the growth of the multicultural mainstream, the embrace of the trends of natural hair and the progressive increase in multicultural purchasing power, various brands and companies have become more and more visible in recent years." Carol Mouyiaris, founder of Black Opal, tells SELF. "I find it wonderful to see new black brands pave the way to the future." Today it's easier than ever to find beauty paraphernalia that work for me as a colorful woman, and I can now find products that appeal to them I fit in places like Sephora and CVS (you could call it the effect Fenty Beauty .)

However, it is always a priority for me to discover and support more and more black beauty businesses. There is still a lot left to do so that the beauty industry can really be inclusive. Aisha Shannon Bates, founder of Coil Beauty agrees. She was inspired to start her ecommerce site after disappointing shopping experiences in beauty stores. "It has come to a point where employees would not even answer my questions about products – they just pointed out the web section they were comfortable selling," Bates told SELF. "Then I knew that I could make this way better than her. So I've created a new shopping experience that's online, bright, beautiful, tailor-made and filled with products designed for African Americans. "

Coil Beauty manages black beauty brands like Unsun Cosmetics, Mielle Organics and others, many of which are also my favorites and are listed in this list. Continue reading for 11 of the best black branded brands that can shop (and celebrate) year-round.
